Engaging All Learners in the Middle Years: Student Voice, Literacy, and Numeracy
Interactive Webinar Series
BC’s Rural Education Advisory, UBC’s Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre, and the Greater Victoria School District 61 invite educators to join in a shared conversation about engaging all learners in the middle years. Sessions have a blend of current thinking, examples from practices, and time to process and personalize ideas. We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Education.
Our three-part interactive webinar series will be led by Dr. Leyton Schnellert with special guests for each session.

Leyton Schnellert, PhD
Leyton is an associate professor in UBC’s Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy and Eleanor Rix Professor in Rural Teacher Education. He focuses on how teachers and teaching and learners and learning can mindfully embrace student diversity and inclusive education. Dr. Schnellert is the Pedagogy and Participation research cluster lead in the UBC Institute for Community Engaged Research and co-chair of BC’s Rural Education Advisory Committee. He has been a middle- and secondary-school classroom teacher and a learning-resource teacher for grades K–12. His books, films, and research articles are widely referenced locally, nationally, and globally.

Melissa Burdock, Teacher SD67
Melissa is a grade 7 French Immersion and Learning Support teacher in SD67. She considers herself to be a life-long learner and is currently furthering her education through UBC in Curriculum Studies. Melissa is passionate about educating the whole child through SEL, embedding Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being in the classroom and strength-based inclusive practices.
Janice Moase, Learning Support Teacher SD67
Janice Moase is a Learning Support Teacher at KVR Middle School in Penticton, British Columbia. She received her Master’s of Education from UBCO, where her focus was on nurturing inclusive classrooms through collaborative models of support. Janice is passionate about teacher collaboration, innovative teaching and meaningful inclusion for all students. Research interests include strength based practices that include all learners, and investigating instructional practices that use literature to ensure youth feel seen, heard and valued in our classrooms.

Shaheen Musani, Teacher Consultant SD38
Shaheen Musani is a teacher consultant in the Richmond School District. Her focus is in supporting teachers from K-12 in curriculum implementation and assessment. She works across grades and subject areas including Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Career Education and Physical Health Education. Prior to this role, Shaheen worked as a secondary Math, ELA and Career Education teacher for 17 years. In addition to her work with teachers, Shaheen has supported the development of curriculum and assessment standards for British Columbia’s Ministry of Education.
Nikki Lineham, Teacher SD61
Nikki Lineham is a math teacher, math education consultant, co-founder of Educating Now, and a PhD candidate. Nikki is passionate about making mathematics accessible for all people and strives to support teachers, students and parents in developing numeracy skills. She created Educating Now, an online resource for teachers, as a way to support teachers in learning to use manipulatives, visuals and language to help their students develop deeper math understanding. Nikki completed a postgraduate certificate in ethnomathematics at the University of Hawaii in 2019, which inspired her to study culturally responsive mathematics education and spatial reasoning through her PhD studies at the University of Victoria.

Vicki Roberts, Principal SD61
Vicki is currently a middle school principal in Greater Victoria. Previously she was a vice principal for 6 years in middle and secondary school and on the District Learning Team. Before going into school leadership, Vicki was a teacher in middle school and elementary for 10 years. Vicki is passionate about creating literacy rich learning communities through authentic learning opportunities that bring students’ out of school and in school worlds together. Her work is grounded through her core values of connection, humour, gratitude, and equity. In her down time, Vicki loves to cook, read, and spend time at the beach.
